The fight took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Paradise, Nevada. The referee officiating the fight was Mills Lane, who was brought in as a late replacement when Tyson’s camp protested the original selection of Mitch Halpern (who officiated the first fight) as the referee.

These conflicting views of Tupac reflect, to a degree, racial and social chasms. Rap fans insist that performers be authentic representatives of ghetto life: that they live the life they rap about; that life conform to art, so to speak. Rap’s critics, on the other hand, are terrified that life will conform to art, that the behavior—the drug dealing and the violence—described by rappers will seep into the mainstream culture. The majority of ardent fans and consumers of rap are, in fact, middle-class white youths. (Seventy per cent of those who buy rap records are white.) It is the fear of a violent, marginalized culture’s influence on susceptible young people that fuels much of the political debate, and this fear is exacerbated by the widespread adoption of hip-hop style.

The 27-year-old Paul, meanwhile, has transitioned from YouTube to professional boxing and has won nine of his 10 fights. His only defeat came against Tommy Fury, the younger half-brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, in February 2023.

The latter competed against Tommy Fury in early 2023, losing against the half-brother of WBC heavyweight champion Tommy Fury via split decision. Before the fight in Saudi Arabia, Paul earned an easy $250,000. All he had to do was get a tattoo of the vodka brand Au Vodka.

As an amateur, he was highly regarded by American promoters by 2009 after winning a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics and bronze medals at the 2007 and 2009 World Championships. His career stalled from 2009 to 2019, however, by a combination of his belated release from the Chinese boxing authorities to turn professional, the managerial and legal fiasco of two successive fringe promotional companies, and his visa problems. He could not line up high-profile matches until he signed Matchroom Sport in 2020 at 37 years of age. Zhang considered his fight with Jerry Forrest in 2021 to be the landmark moment of his career until that point.

Tyson married actress Robin Givens on February 7, 1988, at Holy Angels Catholic Church during a traditional ceremony in Chicago. Givens was known at the time for her role on the sitcom Head of the Class. Tyson’s marriage to Givens was especially tumultuous, with allegations of violence, spousal abuse, and mental instability on Tyson’s part.

Tyson’s massive success in the ring was often accompanied by controversy away from it. He has served time in prison and jail on multiple occasions after being convicted on sexual assault, physical assault, and drug charges.

Mike Tyson’s impact on the world of boxing is undeniable. His immense talent, electrifying performances, and larger-than-life personality made him a global superstar. Tyson’s name became synonymous with power, ferocity, and sheer dominance.

In 2019, a year before the official closure of Roc Nation’s boxing division, the Lane brothers negotiated Zhang’s release with Matchroom Boxing USA, which Duva, again, had cut a deal with. In 2024, Zhang’s co-manager recalled his promoter tried to stop him leaving by intimidation, dragging him into legal battles and refusing to line him up site in yahoo.com fights. Brothers Tommy and Terry Lane, sons of boxing referee Mills Lane, joined Zhang as advisers and helped guide him out of trouble. It was not clear whether this incident was referring to Zhang’s termination of contract in November 2014 or in 2019.

On Nov. 9, 1996, Evander Holyfield faced Tyson in the ring. Holyfield was physically bigger than Tyson and figured out how to throw Tyson off his rhythm with body blows, even stunning him with a head butt, Perez said.

The champion landed better shots in the opening rounds, slowing down Ball with combinations to the body. But some of the rounds were ugly, and Vargas could not get into his rhythm while Ball kept making lunging attacks.

Buster laying out the “baddest man on the planet” remains one of the biggest upsets in not only boxing but also sports history. For fight fans of a certain age, the match has always provided a “do you remember where you were” moment—which I do. I was with a college buddy inside the Central Park Athletic Club, a sports-and-arts venue built back when downtown Milwaukee was a thriving enterprise. The ramshackle facility was known for its bar, which featured a big screen, an HBO subscription and a lax policy toward the sale of beer to Marquette University freshmen.
